The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program provides teachers and children with a fun and exciting way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. Accelerated Reader is a self-paced, individualized computer-assisted reading program that we have available at our school, funded by the SPE PTA! AR books are available in the classrooms, the school media center, in your child’s collection of books, and at the public library.
You can view books on your child’s level at www.arbookfind.com . There are thousands of books that are on the list to choose from! Most SPE teachers request that their children read AR books on the child’s reading level and you can ask your child’s teacher for this info. Once your child has read an AR book, he or she will come to school and can take a short multiple-choice quiz about the book on the computer. The computer records the quiz results and provides individualized feedback for the teacher, student, and parent. Your child’s teacher will set a quarterly goal of AR points for your child. All students who successfully reach their reading goals are rewarded with a field trip lunch with the principal at a participating neighborhood restaurant. This special outing, which the kids LOVE, is sponsored by the SPE PTA.
